Cry Baby Review
2026Album
The driest rapper in America stops underplaying it, and the result is thirty five minutes of controlled fury.

Thirty five minutes, no guests, and a rapper who has spent a decade underplaying everything deciding that restraint has run out. Dark Times was interior and hushed. This is the opposite: guitars, distortion, punk tempos, and a voice pushing at the top of its range for the first time. Blackberry Marmalade arrives with a video staging a mass shooting and sets the terms, White Flag and Cotton hold them, and the subject across the record is American violence as policy rather than accident.
Staples being Staples, none of it is delivered as a speech. The jokes are intact, the deadpan is intact, and the anger works precisely because it comes from a writer who normally refuses to raise his voice at all. Production is where reasonable people disagree. The rock textures are a genuine departure and a few of them sound like a first attempt, with mixes that bury him at the exact moment a line needs to land, and the shortest songs stop before their ideas finish.
Reception has been strongly favorable across the board, with a recurring note that the album demands patience and repays it. This is his angriest record, his most compressed statement of purpose, and the first one he has put out on his own label.
