Chicken-n-Beer Review
2003Album
Ludacris's first number one album: two huge singles, and a great deal of filler built on jokes that wear thin.

Chicken-n-Beer is the album that made Ludacris a chart act on his own terms. It debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 with 429,000 copies in its first week, and Stand Up and Splash Waterfalls became his first singles to reach the top ten of the Hot 100. Stand Up is why it matters here: Kanye West produced it, and it became Ludacris's first number one single.
The flow is as quick and versatile as ever, and the production, from Kanye, DJ Paul and Juicy J, Erick Sermon and DJ Nasty & LVM among others, is sturdy. The trouble is the material. Too many songs are a single joke stretched past three minutes, the skits interrupt more than they connect, and the songs about women are the kind critics called cringeworthy at the time.
There is a very good forty minute album in here. At sixty minutes it is an average one.
