Blunted on Reality Review
1994Album
A group with three enormous talents pushed into a hard New York sound that fits none of them.

Everything that makes the group special is present and buried. The label wanted a hard boom bap record to compete with what was selling in New York, so the beats are loud and busy, the tempos are pushed and the vocals are mixed to shout rather than persuade. The singing, which two years later would be the whole point, is almost entirely absent.
Nappy Heads is the closest thing to a hit and it only worked once it had been remixed into something calmer. Vocab has real charm in its acoustic version. Boof Baf is exhausting. What you can hear underneath is three people who do not want to be doing this, one of them with a voice the arrangement keeps stepping on. It sold poorly, the group took control afterwards, and everything about the follow up reads as a correction of this record.
