Beautiful Thugger Girls Review
2017Album
A country and love record from the strangest singer in rap, and it half works, which is a lot.

Announced as a singing album and mostly delivered as one, this is the project where the eccentricity gets pointed at melody rather than rhythm. Half of it is built on acoustic guitar and brushed drums, which should be a catastrophe and instead produces some of his prettiest work. Family Don't Matter opens with a country lick and a hook he sells completely. Relationship is the hit and it deserved to be.
Do U Love Me and Me or Us are unguarded in a way he rarely allows. Where it falters is the middle, where the concept loosens and three or four tracks revert to standard trap with a softer vocal on top, which satisfies neither ambition. The singing itself is not conventionally good and that has never mattered with him. Taken as a swing at something outside the form it is admirable and frequently lovely, and it is the record that made the later genre hopping credible.
