ATLiens Review
1996Album
They took the funk out into space and came back with the coldest, strangest record of that year.

Everything gets colder and better. They took over most of the production themselves and stripped the sound back to bare drums, dub bass and long ringing spaces, and the effect is a record that sounds like it was recorded at night in an empty building. Elevators is the centre, a beat made almost entirely of a rimshot and a low hum, and the last verse, about being asked how they got famous by people who used to ignore them, is one of the great pieces of rap writing.
Wheelz of Steel and Two Dope Boyz keep the mood. Jazzy Belle is where the writing gets uncomfortable and specific. Meanwhile one of them has begun eating differently, dressing strangely and rapping about it, and the other has become the best straightforward writer in the South. The distance travelled in two years is remarkable, and the album still sounds like nothing else.
