A beautiful, safety-obsessed seven-seat EV whose software took far too long to catch up to its hardware

The EX90 is Volvo's flagship, a seven-seat electric SUV built around a 107 kWh usable battery and, unusually, a roof-mounted lidar sensor feeding its safety and driver assist systems. Range lands between 300 and 310 miles depending on wheels, the base twin-motor car makes 402 hp and the Performance version up to 510 hp, and pricing starts near $79,995.
At its best the EX90 is deeply appealing. The design inside and out is calm, confident, and beautifully made, the seats and ride are superb for long trips, and the safety hardware, including that lidar, is genuinely advanced. Driven gently it is one of the most relaxing ways to travel with a full family aboard.
The trouble was the software. The EX90 launched with its features incomplete and its systems buggy, and it took Volvo far too long to deliver the polish the hardware deserved. Even setting that aside, it is a heavy luxury EV, so efficiency is only fair, and depreciation on cars like this has been steep.
For a family that prizes safety, comfort, and Scandinavian design over the last word in efficiency, the EX90 is lovely, provided you buy a later build with the software sorted. Early adopters paid for Volvo's growing pains.
