Toyota Tundra (2022) Review
2022TundraCar
The first new Tundra in fifteen years drives beautifully and holds its value like few vehicles on sale, and its twin-turbo V6 carries a serious recall record.

The 2022 Tundra was Toyota's first full redesign of its big pickup in fifteen years: a new frame, coil springs in place of the old rear leaf springs, a composite bed and, for the first time, no V8. Instead there is a 3.4-liter twin-turbo V6 with up to 389 hp, or the i-Force Max hybrid with 437 hp and 583 lb-ft, both through a 10-speed automatic. Testers loved how it drives: the powertrain is smooth and strong from low revs, the highway ride is calm, and the 14-inch touchscreen is among the easiest big screens in the class.
Fuel economy is ordinary at 19 to 22 mpg combined, since the hybrid is tuned for torque rather than frugality, handling is clumsy when hurried, and prices run from $35,950 to $73,530 before delivery. The bigger story is the engine. Since May 2024 Toyota has recalled gas Tundras three times, and the campaigns now reach trucks built as late as August 2024, because machining debris left inside the V6 can ruin a main bearing and stall the engine. More than 70,000 engines have been replaced so far. Hybrids are not covered. That is why the reliability mark sits two grades under the overall, and why any used 2022 needs its recall work confirmed.
Otherwise it is a Tundra through and through: resale is among the strongest of any vehicle sold in America, running costs are reasonable and the crew cab earned a Top Safety Pick+ award. A very good truck, let down by the thing Toyota is supposed to do best.
