Toyota Land Cruiser (2024) Review

The nameplate came back at half the old price, with a hybrid four cylinder and a boot compromised by its own battery.

Toyota did something unusual here, taking a nameplate that had drifted into eighty thousand dollar luxury territory and rebuilding it as a proper, affordable, boxy off roader. It sits on the same body on frame architecture as the new 4Runner, with a locking centre differential, a disconnecting front anti roll bar for articulation and short overhangs that let it approach obstacles the soft roaders cannot. The design is the star, all flat glass and round lights and honest surfaces, and it will still look right in fifteen years.
The 2.4 litre turbo hybrid makes 326 horsepower and a hefty slug of torque, and it is both quicker and thirstier feeling than the numbers suggest. Compromises are real. The hybrid battery sits under the boot floor, raising it and killing storage, there is no third row, the interior is durable rather than luxurious and the ride on a broken road is unmistakably trucklike. Reliability and service costs follow the Toyota pattern, which is to say excellent. Resale on any Land Cruiser has historically been the strongest in the industry and this one is no exception.
