The cheapest genuinely great chassis on sale, and the second generation finally has enough engine.

The first car fixed the handling and got the engine wrong. The second fixed the engine. Going from 2.0 to 2.4 litres added 23 horsepower and, more importantly, filled in the torque hole that made the original frustrating in the middle of a corner. Everything else that made it special survived: a low seating position, light and honest steering, a limited slip differential as standard, and a kerb weight that has quietly become a rarity.

It is slow by the standards of everything else on this list and completely uninterested in caring, because the point is that you can use all of it on a public road. Running costs are the lowest here by a wide margin, insurance included. The interior is plain and the boot is small, and early cars carried a recall over engines that could fail from machining debris, which is a real mark against an otherwise dependable pair of manufacturers. Values hold well. For the money, nothing teaches you more.
