2024Macan SCar

The last combustion Macan drives better than any compact crossover has a right to, and charges for every convenience twice.

The petrol Macan finished its run as the best steering crossover ever sold. The rack is quick, weighted properly and communicative in a way nothing else at this size manages, body control is superb without the ride turning brittle, and the 2.9 litre twin turbo V6 in S form makes 375 horsepower with a hard mid range and a properly sporting soundtrack through the dual clutch gearbox. It shrinks around you on a good road. Living with it is a set of trade offs.

The interior is well built but the design dates back further than the price suggests, rear seat space and boot volume are tight for a family, and the options list is aggressive enough that a well specified car costs many thousands more than the sticker implies. Fuel economy is poor for the size. Ownership costs follow Porsche norms, with expensive tyres, brakes and dealer labour, and out of warranty work on the transmission or cooling is not cheap. Values hold up better than most German rivals because demand for the last combustion Macan is real. Buy it to drive it.
