Porsche 911 GT2 RS (991) Review

2018911 GT2 RSCar

700 PS through the rear wheels alone made it the fastest production car round the Nordschleife in 2017, and more car than most roads can use.

The GT2 RS is a rear-drive 911 Turbo with almost everything turned up, and the 991 version was the most powerful 911 Porsche had built. It was first seen at Microsoft's Xbox briefing at E3 2017 as the cover car of Forza Motorsport 7, launched at the Goodwood Festival of Speed that summer, and reached US buyers early in 2018 at $293,200. Porsche planned about 1,000, and when four sank with the cargo ship Grande America in 2019, it restarted production to replace them.

The 3.8 liter twin-turbo flat-six makes 700 PS at 7,000 rpm and 750 Nm from 2,200 to 4,500 rpm, helped by larger turbochargers and a system that sprays water onto the charge-air coolers at high temperatures. A seven-speed PDK is the only gearbox, a first for a GT2, chosen to cope with the torque. A magnesium roof, carbon bonnet, wings and boot lid, polycarbonate rear and side windows and a titanium exhaust hold the weight to 1,470 kg, and the Weissach package removes another 30 kg with a carbon roof, carbon anti-roll bars, a titanium roll cage and BBS magnesium wheels.

Porsche quoted 2.7 seconds to 60 mph and 211 mph. In September 2017 Lars Kern lapped the Nordschleife in 6 minutes 47.3 seconds, the fastest production car there at the time. On the road it is civil at a cruise, but the power arrives with a force that demands attention whenever the rear tyres are loaded.

Its engine is a development of the one Porsche introduced in the 911 Turbo in 2009, and the car has proved robust; the notable recall covered driveshaft bolts that might not have been tightened properly. It is costly to run in the expected places: carbon ceramic brakes are standard, the rear tyres are 325 mm wide on 21-inch wheels, and fuel use reflects the output; if the five-liter tank of distilled water for the intercooler spray runs dry, the engine management reduces power.

The cabin is a 991 GT cabin with carbon bucket seats, fine for a long drive if never quiet. Values have climbed well past the sticker, and in July 2026 a 593-mile Weissach car in Paint to Sample Viola sold for $1 million on Bring a Trailer, which Carscoops believed to be the model's first seven-figure public sale.

The GT2 RS is the most extreme road 911 of its generation and a statement about how much power a rear-drive 911 can use. It is not the most rewarding GT car of the 991 era, because the turbocharged engine lacks the GT3's response and the performance is hard to explore away from a circuit, but as a demonstration of speed it had few rivals at any price.
