2024RogueCar

A three cylinder with variable compression, thirty three miles per gallon, and a transmission reputation that will not go away.

The current Rogue is a much better car than the one it replaced, and the engineering is more interesting than the badge suggests. The 1.5 litre three cylinder uses variable compression, physically altering how far the pistons travel to trade efficiency for power, and it produces 201 horsepower with economy in the low thirties, which beats every conventional four cylinder rival. The seats are excellent on a long drive, the interior on the Platinum trim looks a class above, and the divider system in the boot is genuinely useful.

Around town it is quiet and easy. The doubts are structural. That engine is complex and the long term repair picture is unproven, while the continuously variable transmission carries the reputational weight of a decade of failures in older Nissans, and even improved units make buyers nervous. Three cylinder vibration intrudes at low revs. Fleet volume and brand perception then hurt residual values, so an owner keeping it three years loses more than a RAV4 or CR-V buyer would. Pleasant, efficient and hard to recommend over the Japanese benchmarks unless the discount is large.
