Mercedes-Benz GLC 300 (2023) Review

The most luxurious cabin in the compact class by a distance, and the most expensive one to keep past the warranty.

Nothing else at this size feels this expensive inside. The GLC borrows the vertical display, turbine vents, ambient lighting and switchgear quality from cars two classes above, and the effect at night is genuinely theatrical. Refinement is excellent, the ride on the optional air suspension is close to serene, and the seats support you properly on a long drive. Space and boot volume are competitive rather than remarkable. The powertrain is the disappointment. The mild hybrid 2.0 litre turbo four makes 255 horsepower, moves the car briskly and sounds thin and industrial when you extend it, which is jarring in a cabin this good.

Almost every function now lives in the touchscreen, and the steering wheel touch controls misread inputs. Ownership is the hard part. Dealer labour rates are the highest in the segment, air suspension and forty eight volt electrical faults are expensive when they arrive, reliability surveys place it mid pack, and depreciation in this class is severe. Lease it and it is one of the nicest places to spend three years. Own it long term with your eyes open.
