McLaren Artura Review

Clever, light and genuinely quick, launched before it was finished and never quite recovered.

The Artura should have been a triumph. It introduced a completely new carbon architecture designed around hybrid hardware, a new 3.0 litre twin-turbo V6 with a 120 degree vee, and an axial flux electric motor in the gearbox that is remarkably compact, for a combined 671 horsepower and around eleven miles of electric running. It weighs less than most hybrid rivals and drives beautifully, with the same clarity of steering that makes McLarens special.

Then it went on sale. Production slipped by more than a year, early cars went back for fuel system and software recalls repeatedly, and owners reported failures that a car at this price should not have. The reputational damage was immediate and the used market punished it harder than any of its rivals. The interior is a step up from earlier McLarens without being class-leading. There is a very good car underneath, and a first owner paid dearly to discover it.
