The Temerario replaces the beloved Huracan and, with it, the naturally aspirated V10. In its place is an all new 4.0 liter twin-turbo V8 spun alongside three electric motors, a hybrid system making a combined 907 hp. The headline is the redline: 10,000 rpm, extraordinary for a turbo engine. Lamborghini claims 0 to 62 mph in 2.7 seconds and 213 mph, and the car starts at $386,649.
The engineering is the story. Preserving a 10,000 rpm ceiling under turbocharging is a real achievement, the electric motors fill the low end torque that turbos and high revs can leave hollow, and the result is both savagely fast and, by supercar standards, usable. It looks the part and the cabin is a step up in quality and technology over the Huracan.
The compromises come with the territory and the technology. It is a heavy, complex machine by mid-engine standards, fuel economy sits around 16 mpg, and the maintenance and repair bills for a hybrid Lamborghini will be eye watering. Long-term reliability of a first-year, all new drivetrain is a genuine unknown.
For the buyer who wants the newest, most technically ambitious junior Lamborghini and can stomach losing the V10's voice, the Temerario is a thrilling leap forward. Nostalgics will still miss the old engine's sound.
