Jeep Wrangler (2024) Review

Terrible at almost everything a car is asked to do, unbeatable at the one thing it exists for, and it barely loses value.

Judged as a car the Wrangler fails most of the tests. The solid front axle makes the steering vague and wandery on the motorway, wind noise through the removable roof and doors is loud enough to raise your voice at seventy, the ride is jittery over broken tarmac, crash test results have been mediocre by modern standards and rollover ratings are poor. Economy in the high teens is the norm and the 3.6 litre V6 is willing but thirsty. Reliability records are consistently below average, with electrical faults, leaks and the well known steering wander complaints.
Now the other column. Nothing at this price goes as far off road, particularly the Rubicon with its locking differentials, disconnecting anti roll bar and low range gearing. The doors come off, the roof comes off, the windscreen folds flat, and no other new vehicle offers that. Parts are cheap and the aftermarket is enormous, so keeping one running is simple. And resale is extraordinary, the strongest in this file, because demand never softens. It is a hobby you can finance and sell later at a small loss.
