The Lightning's great insight was to change as little as possible. It is an F-150, with the same cab, the same bed, the same controls and the same dealer network, so a builder can use it on day one without learning anything new. What it adds is genuinely transformative. The frunk is a lockable, drainable four hundred litre box where the engine used to be. The onboard generator delivers 9.6 kilowatts from the bed, enough to run a site or, with the home integration hardware, an entire house through an outage.
It is also seriously quick and drives better than a body on frame truck has any right to, because the battery sits low and Ford fitted independent rear suspension. The limits are physical. 320 miles becomes about 130 with a trailer behind it, which for many truck buyers ends the conversation there. Ford's price cuts and a long production pause hammered residuals, and used Lightnings have been among the steepest fallers of anything on sale.
