440 miles of range from a battery the size of four ordinary electric cars, which is either engineering or brute force.

General Motors answered range anxiety by fitting a battery of roughly 205 kilowatt hours, about four times what a small electric hatchback carries, and the result is a genuine 440 mile figure no other electric vehicle approaches. It runs an 800 volt architecture and accepts 350 kilowatts, so refilling that enormous pack is less absurd than it sounds. The RST makes 754 horsepower and 785 pound feet, tows ten thousand pounds and rides on air suspension with four wheel steering that shrinks it usefully in a car park.
The midgate is the genuinely clever part, folding the rear bulkhead down so a nine foot load fits inside a five foot nine bed. The costs are equally large. It weighs close to four tonnes, efficiency is poor in absolute terms, the tyres and the insurance are expensive, and the software has been a real source of owner complaints. The RST trim costs close to six figures, which residual values have not respected.
