One of the great engines in one of the most complete cars, with a maintenance bill that arrives like weather.

The X5 is the default answer in this class for good reason. The 3.0 litre turbo inline six makes 375 horsepower, revs cleanly, sounds expensive and delivers torque everywhere, and it is widely regarded as one of the best engines currently made. Paired with the eight speed automatic and optional air suspension, it gives the car a rare mix of long distance comfort and genuine pace. The cabin is beautifully finished, the driving position is spot on, the boot is huge with a split tailgate, and the technology works.
Rear seat space is generous. The reason the grade sheet is not glowing sits in the ownership columns. Air suspension compressors and struts, the cooling system, valve cover and oil filter housing gaskets and the electronics all become real costs after warranty, dealer labour rates are among the highest here, and specialist tyres and brakes are expensive. Depreciation on large German SUVs is steep. Buy a lease return at three years, budget a genuine annual maintenance fund, and you get an enormous amount of car for the money. Ignore that fund at your peril.
