Still the sports sedan everyone else is measured against, and still the one whose fourth year of ownership hurts.

The 3 Series remains the reference. Weight sits low and centrally, the eight speed automatic is close to telepathic, and the 2.0 litre turbo four makes 255 horsepower with a fat torque plateau that suits real roads better than any rival naturally aspirated engine. Steering feel came back with this generation, and on the adaptive dampers the car covers a broken B road without ever feeling busy. Inside, build quality is excellent and the driving position is perfect, though the mid life update moved climate control into the touchscreen and the software now serves you things you did not ask for.
Then the ownership arithmetic. A leased 330i is a fine car. A bought one, kept past the warranty, is a different proposition, because the oil filter housing gasket, the cooling system and the electric water pump are known spend items, and dealer labour rates on any of them are punishing. Depreciation compounds it, with sedans in this class shedding roughly half their value in three years. Buy it used at the bottom of that curve, budget properly for the maintenance, and it is one of the great daily cars.
