Seedance 2.0 landed in February 2026 and the technical verdict was settled in about a day: photorealistic clips, coherent motion, faces that held together, and a level of likeness fidelity nobody had shipped publicly before. The other verdict was settled just as fast. Disney sent a cease and desist on February 13, alleging the model had been trained on its work without compensation. Paramount followed on February 15 over Star Trek, South Park and Dora the Explorer. ByteDance replied on February 16 that it respects intellectual property and would strengthen safeguards. Senators Marsha Blackburn and Peter Welch asked it to shut the thing down on March 16.

That history is the review. What the model can do is remarkable and what it is permitted to do keeps moving, because every guardrail added in answer to a letter removes something people were using the day before. Grading a tool whose output depends on which characters are blocked this month is not a normal exercise, and the ease of use grade carries that uncertainty as much as it carries the interface.

For anyone still weighing it up, the line has moved on. Seedance 2.5 arrived on July 31 with thirty second native clips, local editing that changes one detail without regenerating the whole shot, and a beta three minute mode. The local editing is the genuinely useful advance, because it turns generation from a slot machine into something nearer a craft. Pricing runs through ByteDance's own apps and its cloud API rather than a published flat subscription, and availability has shifted with each round of safeguards.
