Runway has been in generative video longer than anyone and Gen-3 is the point where its output became genuinely cinematic: lighting, texture, camera movement and physical plausibility in a ten second clip that would have been impossible two years earlier. The image to video mode is the useful one, taking a still and animating it with a control over motion that the text prompt alone does not offer. For a mood board, a pitch, a title sequence or an advert with a generous budget, it earns its place.
The trouble begins the moment a clip needs to be longer than a breath, or to match the clip before it, or to show a hand doing something specific. Consistency between generations is poor, the model resists precise direction, and the credit based pricing means that the iteration those failures demand gets expensive fast. It is a remarkable demonstration and an early tool, and the grade reflects what it delivers today rather than where the field is going.
