Kimi K2.6, from China's Moonshot AI, landed in April 2026 as an open weight, one trillion parameter mixture of experts with 32 billion active parameters, a 256,000 token context window and native four bit quantisation. Its signature is the Agent Swarm primitive, which fans a task out to as many as 300 sub agents across thousands of coordinated steps, aimed squarely at long horizon coding and multi step automation.

For agentic and coding work it is one of the most interesting open releases of the year, and the price is friendly at about sixty cents in and two dollars fifty out per million tokens on the official API, with the weights available under a modified MIT license for self hosting. The trade offs: blended pricing across third party hosts runs higher and less predictable, the swarm approach rewards careful orchestration rather than working magically out of the box, and general chat polish trails the big consumer assistants.

Kimi K2.6 is for developers building agent systems who want open weights, a large parameter budget and a coding first design, and who are willing to engineer around it. If you want a simple, polished assistant or the deepest single shot reasoning, this is not that, but as an open foundation for automation it is a standout.
