xAI's current flagship, released on 12 August 2026 and served through the xAI API as grok-4.6. It carries a 500,000-token context window at $2 per million input tokens and $6 per million output, with a knowledge cutoff of 1 February 2026. The focus this generation is long-running agents, agentic coding and interactive visual work, and xAI's stated design change is that the model self-tests and verifies its own output more often before moving to the next step, which is aimed squarely at the drift that breaks long autonomous runs.
On the leading independent intelligence index it scores 61, level with OpenAI's flagship and a single point behind Anthropic's most capable model, which makes it the cheapest option currently sitting at the frontier. Consumer access runs through X Premium+ at $40 a month and SuperGrok at $30, with image, video and PDF understanding available alongside text. This grade is a provisional placeholder pending hands-on testing.
