Hand it a small, well described ticket and it finishes the job. Hand it a real problem and watch the meter.

Devin arrived in 2024 as the first software engineer you could hire by the seat, and spent its first year living down a launch video that independent engineers took apart line by line. Two years later the product is real. Point it at a well scoped ticket in a codebase it already knows, a dependency bump, a test backlog, a mechanical refactor across two hundred files, and it plans, edits, runs the suite and opens a pull request with nobody watching. Teams with a tidy backlog get genuine hours back, which is why Cognition raised a billion dollars in May and another two billion in September, at a valuation nobody would have written down in 2024.
The trouble starts when the work is not tidy. On ambiguous problems, on anything architectural, on code it has not seen, reviewers describe the same arc: confident motion, plausible output, and a review cycle that costs more than writing the thing yourself. Delegation turns out to be a skill the buyer has to learn, and the learning happens on the meter.
Pricing is the other wall. The entry plan is twenty dollars, but the real unit is the agentic computing unit, roughly a quarter hour of machine time, billed at $2.25 each on that plan, so an afternoon of autonomous work runs into serious money and the team tier opens at five hundred dollars a month. Coding sits above the overall grade because the code it writes is good. The overall grade reflects how narrow the band is where sending it out alone is the right call.
