Command A is Cohere's enterprise flagship, an open weight model of about 111 billion parameters with a 256,000 token context window, built less for leaderboard glory than for the work large organisations actually pay for: retrieval augmented generation, tool use, agents and multilingual coverage. It lists at two dollars fifty in and ten out per million tokens and deploys across AWS, Azure, Oracle and, crucially, private and self hosted environments.
Its strengths are grounding and governance. It is tuned to answer from your documents with citations, to run inside a customer's own security perimeter, and to handle many languages, which is exactly what regulated enterprises want. The flip side is that it is not a frontier generalist. On hard reasoning it is solid rather than special, and coding is a clear weak point compared with the models built for it, so it is the wrong tool for a heavy software agent.
Command A is for enterprises standing up secure, private, retrieval heavy assistants and workflows, where deployability, citations and languages matter more than topping a benchmark. Teams whose core need is frontier reasoning or serious coding should pair it with, or replace it by, a stronger generalist, but for grounded enterprise knowledge work it is purpose built and dependable.
