Devin began as the headline grabbing autonomous software engineer, and by 2026 it has matured into a two part product. Cognition folded the Windsurf editor it bought in 2025 into a free download called Devin Desktop, with unlimited tab completion and inline edits, while the autonomous cloud agent, the DeepWiki codebase memory, Ask Devin and the API sit behind a subscription. Running the agent that actually plans and ships work starts at 20 dollars a month, with a Max tier at 200 and team plans above that.

The unit that meters the work is the Agent Compute Unit, roughly fifteen minutes of active autonomous effort, though self serve plans now wrap that in daily and weekly quotas plus on demand overages. Point Devin at a ticket and it will branch, write code, run tests and open a pull request while you watch, which is a genuinely different workflow from a chat assistant that waits for your next prompt.

The honest caveat is reliability. Devin is at its best on well scoped, repetitive engineering, migrations, dependency bumps, test writing and backlog grinding, and it can wander on sprawling, ambiguous problems, so it still needs a human reviewing the diffs. Priced sensibly and pointed at the right work, it is one of the most capable autonomous coders you can rent, but it is a power tool, not a hands off oracle.
