Cowork is Claude Code rebuilt for everyone who was never going to open a terminal. It arrived in January as a research preview on macOS, reached Windows in February and went generally available on April 9, and it lives as a tab beside Chat in the desktop app rather than as another product to learn. Point it at a folder, describe the outcome you want, and it reads what is there, edits and creates files in place, runs jobs on a schedule and asks before doing anything it cannot take back.

For work that lives in documents, which is most office work, nothing else is this dependable. Consultants merging a folder of interviews, operations teams reconciling exports and managers rebuilding the same Monday report all get back a real spreadsheet or a real deck rather than a wall of text to paste somewhere.

Two things keep it out of the top tier. The usage allowance is shared with Claude chat and Claude Code, and busy days drain it fast enough that Anthropic tightened weekday peak limits in March, conceded that people were hitting the ceiling sooner than expected, and then dropped that peak reduction again for Pro and Max in May, which still pushes anyone who leans on it toward the $100 and $200 plans.

Driving a browser costs more of that allowance than anything else it does. The second is reach, and it has moved. Web and mobile arrived in July and the desktop build now covers Linux, but those are all beta, the full feature set still lives on the macOS and Windows desktop, and the fastest parallel mode is held back for the expensive tiers. Writing code is not the job here, which is what the coding grade records rather than a failure.
