ERNIE 5.1, released by Baidu in May 2026, is a sparse mixture of experts model that Baidu says was trained at roughly 6 percent of the pretraining cost of comparable frontier systems, using about a third of the total parameters and half the active parameters of ERNIE 5.0. It targets text tasks in Chinese and English with a 128,000 token context window and up to 65,536 output tokens, and on launch it reached number four on the LMArena Search Arena leaderboard, behind only two Claude Opus variants and GPT-5.5 Search.
The story is cost efficient quality. Baidu's Qianfan platform prices it at about fifty nine cents in and two dollars sixty five out per million tokens, cheap for the capability, and the model is genuinely good at grounded search style answering and Chinese language work. The limits are clear: it is text only with no multimodal input, its 128,000 token context is smaller than the million token norm at the top, and its ecosystem and reach outside China are thin.
ERNIE 5.1 is for developers working in Chinese and English who want strong search and writing performance at a low price, particularly those already on Baidu's cloud. For multimodal work, the largest contexts, or a global support footprint, other flagships fit better, but as a cost efficient text model it is a real contender.
