Apple Foundation Models, with a custom Google Gemini model behind Siri AIAI Model
Two years of apologies, then a Siri worth talking to, and for now it costs nothing if you already own the phone.

Nothing in this category has been judged as harshly, and most of it was earned. The 2024 launch sold an assistant that knew your calendar, your mail and what was on your screen, shipped notification summaries that garbled the news instead, and then postponed the part everybody had upgraded for. Reporting through 2025 had Apple's own staff placing the work years behind the field, and buyers who paid for a phone on the strength of a keynote were entitled to feel sold a draft.
June is the turn. Siri AI, announced at the developers conference on the eighth, runs on a Google Gemini model tuned for Apple and routed through Private Cloud Compute, and developers testing the beta describe an assistant that finally holds a thread, knows what there refers to, reads across messages, mail and photos, and acts inside applications instead of offering a web search.
It ships with this fall's operating systems at no extra charge, which is the strongest thing about the whole enterprise. The writing tools, image cleanup and summaries already on the phone cost nothing, and the privacy architecture is the only one in the category an outsider can inspect. The qualifier is doing real work, though: Siri AI arrives in beta, English only until October, with daily caps on anything the servers handle, and Apple has said expanded access will carry a fee later.
The reservations holding the grade have not moved. The best of it needs the newest silicon, the European Union is excluded again this year, and the assistant shipping on phones today is still the old one, until the September 14 update changes that. Writing code is not something it attempts.
