The conceit is superb and it is executed with real craft: a black and white multi camera pastiche shot in front of a live audience, then a colour set with a laugh track, then a seventies family sitcom, each one calibrated so precisely that the small wrongnesses land as horror. Elizabeth Olsen has never been better, playing a woman holding a fantasy together by force and flinching every time the seams show, and Kathryn Hahn steals the whole enterprise as a nosy neighbour with an agenda and a theme tune.

The line about grief being love persevering did more for the character than three films had. Then the last two episodes arrive and the show becomes exactly what it had been avoiding, with rival energy beams, a rival android, an aerial punch up and a mid credits scene setting up a film. Teyonah Parris and Randall Park are stranded doing plot maintenance. The show earned an ending about a woman dismantling her own delusion and settled for a light show.
