Paul Bettany and James Spader make Marvel's best new double act in a thoughtful series that talks through too much of its plot.

VisionQuest is the third series in the line that began with WandaVision and continued in Agatha All Along, created and run by Terry Matalas for Disney+, who directs the last two of its eight episodes. Paul Bettany returns as the white Vision who flew off at the end of WandaVision, now on the run with a young man who may be his son, Tommy Maximoff (Ruaridh Mollica), while James Spader returns as Ultron. Todd Stashwick, Orla Brady as F.R.I.D.A.Y., James D'Arcy as J.A.R.V.I.S. and T'Nia Miller as Jocasta fill out a cast heavy with artificial minds. It premiered with two episodes on October 13, 2026, and runs weekly to a finale on November 10.
Critics saw most of the season before it aired and split on it, though more liked it than not: 82 percent positive on Rotten Tomatoes from 55 reviews and 64 on Metacritic. The consensus finds real, deliberate emotion in its artificial lead, and almost every notice agrees that Bettany and Spader outshine everything around them; the AV Club, at an A minus, called it a fitting follow-up to WandaVision, and TechRadar thought Bettany's penultimate episode his best work in the role.
The objections are about density. Variety admired its visual ideas and Spader's Ultron but found the backstory and abstract concepts too heavy for the emotional core, The Hollywood Reporter complained that too much of it is characters talking through the plot, and others found it padded.
Bettany and Spader earn acting an A, and the series looks better than most Marvel television. The exposition that does the plot's work for it pulls dialogue to a C, the story itself is a B, and it is a B, to be revisited when the season ends.
