The Last of Us Review

The third episode is a self contained love story about two men and a strawberry patch, and it is extraordinary.

Long Long Time, in which twenty years of a relationship between a survivalist and the man who walks into his trap is compressed into a single hour, is the moment the series stopped being an adaptation and became television. It has almost no infected in it, which is precisely the point: the show understood that the source material's action was the least interesting thing it had. Pedro Pascal plays a man whose competence is a shell over unprocessed loss, and Bella Ramsey, whose casting was argued about relentlessly, gives a performance of real hostility and wit that makes the ending land.
The cordyceps design, all tendrils and fruiting bodies rather than digital gore, is genuinely unnerving, and the Kansas City and university sequences show the show can stage violence when it chooses to. The second season is a harder proposition. It splits its perspective, kills a central figure early, and restructures the game's most controversial decision across a season that ends mid story, which leaves it feeling like half of something rather than a whole.
