A workplace comedy that keeps apologising for being a workplace comedy, with visual effects that never settled.

The premise is sound and the lead is excellent. Tatiana Maslany plays a competent lawyer who is furious that a gamma accident has made her body public property, and the show is at its best when it stays in the office, with Ginger Gonzaga as a genuinely funny best friend and Jameela Jamil having enormous fun as an influencer supervillain. The fourth wall breaks are used with more wit than most attempts at the device. The trouble is that a nine episode season built as a legal comedy keeps interrupting itself to service a franchise, so a courtroom plot about a shapeshifting elf is followed by a lecture on the wider universe, and Mark Ruffalo and Charlie Cox arrive to lend credibility the show should not need.

The digital She-Hulk drew immediate criticism and it is warranted; the face reads as a filter rather than a performance, and the reported schedule pressure is visible. The finale, in which the character walks off the set and complains to the studio about her own ending, is a clever idea deployed to excuse the fact that there is no ending.
