Sun-soaked teen treasure hunting that knows exactly what it is, and keeps raising the stakes long after the stakes stopped meaning anything.

John B (Chase Stokes) is living alone on Kildare Island after his father's disappearance, and the first season sends him and his friends JJ (Rudy Pankow), Kiara (Madison Bailey) and Pope (Jonathan Daviss) after the gold of the Royal Merchant, the wreck his father was chasing. Sarah Cameron (Madelyn Cline) crosses from the rich Kooks to the working-class Pogues to join them, and her father Ward (Charles Esten), a smiling patriarch with secrets, is more fun than any of the heroes. Netflix declined to shoot in North Carolina over its House Bill 2 law, so Charleston stands in.
Daniel Fienberg summed up that first season as pretty people, pretty cinematography and pretty dumb, and it still holds. The golden light, boats and marshes look handsome, the cast is likeable, and the dialogue is slogans and exposition shouted over outboard motors.
After that the formula repeats with a bigger prize each year: the Cross of Santo Domingo, El Dorado, Blackbeard's treasure. The second season topped Nielsen's streaming chart in August 2021, the third drew the worst reviews, and the last two were reviewed by few critics, and kindly. It ended in August 2026 after fifty episodes, loyal to its own silliness.
