A Christmas caper about a tired dad and an over enthusiastic archer, and it knows exactly how big it should be.

The virtue here is scale. Nobody is saving the world; a man wants to get home for Christmas, a young woman wants to be taken seriously, a set of stolen suits and a trick arrow keep changing hands, and the whole thing takes place in a version of New York that actually feels cold. Hailee Steinfeld plays Kate Bishop as a person who has never once considered that she might not be good at something, and the contrast with Jeremy Renner's deafened, aching, faintly embarrassed Clint Barton is the whole show.

Alaqua Cox is a real find as Maya Lopez. The car chase across a bridge with exploding arrows is well staged, and the LARP subplot, which sounds terrible, is charming. Where it dips is the villain economy. Vera Farmiga's Eleanor is a plot revelation rather than a character, the Tracksuit Mafia are a running joke stretched too far, and a heavily promoted late arrival exists mostly to set up another show. The ending is a warehouse fight lit like every other warehouse fight.
