A hedge knight, a bald squire and no dragons, and it is the most likable thing Westeros has produced.

After two shows about succession wars, this one is about a large slow man trying to be honorable at a tournament, and the change of scale is the point. Critics welcomed it as the friendliest entry in the franchise: six episodes, one location, a plot that fits in a novella because it came from one, and none of the sprawl that made House of the Dragon hard to follow. Peter Claffey and Dexter Sol Ansell carry it on the strength of the double act between Dunk and Egg, which reviewers singled out repeatedly, and the production keeps the tactile look the franchise has always been good at without reaching for spectacle it does not need.

The reservations are about ambition. Several critics find it slight, a story where very little happens for long stretches and the stakes stay local, and a few argue that stripping out the magic leaves the hero's decency doing more work than it can carry. It is warm, modest and made with care, which is not what anyone expected from this world.
