A brilliant 8K Mini LED with almost nothing in 8K to watch

The QN990H is Samsung's sole 8K set for 2026 and a showcase for how far Mini LED LCD can be pushed. The 85 inch panel is very bright, its Mini LED backlight has a large number of local dimming zones, and the NQ8 AI Gen3 processor does the heavy lifting of upscaling ordinary 4K and lower content toward its 33 million pixels. The glare free coating and wireless One Connect box round out a genuinely high end package.
In a store it dazzles. Bright, dense and enormous, it is the kind of TV that sells itself on a wall of demos. Real viewing is more complicated. There is still almost no native 8K content to stream or buy, so the panel spends its life upscaling, and at normal seating distances the jump from 4K to 8K is very hard to see on an 85 inch screen. It is also a VA style LCD, so viewing angles and backlight bloom cannot match OLED.
Then there is the price. At 8,499 dollars for the 85 inch it costs far more than the class leading 4K sets, and much of that money buys resolution you may never feed. As a technical flagship it is impressive and well built. As a purchase it is very hard to justify in 2026, which is why it scores well on raw performance and poorly on value. Buy it only if you specifically want the biggest, brightest Samsung and price is not a concern.
