Samsung QN90A Neo QLED Review

2021SamsungTV

Samsung's first Mini LED swung hard at OLED on brightness and mostly landed, then priced itself next to one.

Mini LED arrived as a brightness argument and the QN90A made it well. Shrinking the backlight emitters let Samsung pack 792 dimming zones behind the 65-inch panel and push about 1,500 nits on real HDR content, roughly double what a 2021 OLED could hold in a highlight, and in a sunlit living room that gap is the whole experience. The Ultra Viewing Angle layer is the underrated part: this is a VA panel that keeps colour and contrast at forty degrees off-centre, something the technology is not supposed to do, paid for with a small loss of native contrast.

Where it slips is the seam between zones. Star fields, subtitles and any bright object on black show a halo, and the dimming algorithm chases fast content with a visible lag. Samsung still refuses Dolby Vision, so a large share of streaming HDR falls back to HDR10, and the anti-reflective coating that works so well in daylight also frosts blacks in a dark room. At $2,599 for the 65-inch it asked OLED money and did not deliver OLED blacks. A very good LCD priced like a great television.
