Hisense U8N Review

Three thousand nits and sixteen hundred dimming zones for fifteen hundred dollars, which is either a bargain or an accusation.

On paper this should cost twice what it does. The 65-inch U8N carries roughly 1,600 dimming zones, measures close to 3,000 nits on a small window, runs a native 144Hz panel with variable refresh and lag under 15ms, and supports Dolby Vision IQ, HDR10+ and IMAX Enhanced, all for $1,499 list and closer to $1,150 in practice. Against a Mini LED costing three times as much it gives up far less than the price gap suggests. The compromises are in control rather than capability.
Hisense tone maps aggressively, so highlight detail in a bright HDR master gets clipped rather than rolled off, and the automatic brightness limiter drops the whole image when a large white field appears. The VA panel loses saturation off-axis, blooming shows on high-contrast edges even with that zone count, and Google TV here carries more advertising and more stutter than it should. Local dimming behaviour also changes noticeably between picture modes, which makes calibration a project rather than an afternoon. None of that undoes the arithmetic. This is the set that forced the premium brands to start explaining their pricing.
