The Sony Xperia 1 VII is built for a specific kind of buyer, the photographer or videographer who wants manual control and hardware most brands have abandoned. It keeps a 3.5mm headphone jack, a microSD slot and a dedicated two stage shutter button, and its Photography Pro and Videography Pro apps expose the kind of settings enthusiasts crave. The 6.5 inch OLED is excellent, and the front firing stereo speakers are among the best on any phone.
Performance comes from the Snapdragon 8 Elite, and it is quick, with a 5,000mAh battery that lasts a full day. The triple camera pairs a 48MP main and 48MP ultrawide with a 12MP telephoto that zooms optically across a useful range. Image quality is strong, especially with manual input, though the automatic mode is less consistently brilliant than a Pixel or iPhone.
Two things hold it back. The first is price, well over 1,300 dollars, which is a lot when the everyday experience is not obviously better than cheaper rivals. The second is that early units suffered a reliability problem serious enough that Sony paused sales to address spontaneous shutdowns, a worrying look for a phone at this level.
The Xperia 1 VII is a niche device that earns its keep only if you use its unique tools. If you want a headphone jack, expandable storage and deep manual camera control in a modern flagship, nothing else offers this combination. Everyone else should look elsewhere and keep the money.
