Oppo Find X Review

2018OppoPhone

The whole camera array rides up out of the body on a motor, and for six months nothing else looked this futuristic.

Oppo unveiled the Find X at the Louvre on 19 June 2018 for 999 euros, about $1,150, and sold it in China from CNY 4,999. There was no US launch, and the price here is the European figure converted. The front is a 6.42-inch 1080x2340 AMOLED curved at both edges, with no notch, no visible earpiece and no fingerprint reader anywhere; Oppo claimed 93.8 percent screen to body, and the ruler says 87. Every sensor lives in a motorised tray that slides up out of the top in about half a second: a 25MP selfie camera and a structured-light 3D face scanner on the front, a 16MP f/2.0 camera with OIS and a 20MP secondary on the back.

Oppo rated the mechanism for 300,000 cycles and it retracts when the phone senses a fall, but there is no water resistance rating, dust collects in the tray, and face unlock is the only biometric you get, so every payment and every app login waits for the motor. The Snapdragon 845 with 8GB of RAM was as quick as Android got in 2018 and the 3730mAh battery reached the evening, with 20W VOOC charging; the Lamborghini edition swapped in 50W SuperVOOC and a 3400mAh cell for 1,699 euros.

Photos were competitive with the OnePlus 6, no better. ColorOS 5.1 on Android 8.1 was the cost: an iOS imitation with no app drawer, aggressive background app killing and notifications that arrived late. Oppo did carry it to Android 10 with ColorOS 7, months behind Google each time. The slider idea was dead within two years.
