OnePlus 10 Pro Review

2022OnePlusPhone

The OnePlus that shipped with Oppo's software, no water rating unless T-Mobile sold it to you, and a frame that snapped in a bend test.

Pete Lau announced in 2021 that OxygenOS and Oppo's ColorOS would share a codebase, and the 10 Pro is the phone where owners felt it. OxygenOS 12.1 kept the name and lost the character: the quick settings, the settings layout and the animations were ColorOS with a different wallpaper, and the early builds carried bugs OnePlus took months to clear.

That would matter less if the hardware had been beyond argument. The 6.7-inch 3216 x 1440 LTPO 2.0 panel was excellent, with a real 1 to 120Hz range and good brightness. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 was quick but ran warm and throttled under sustained load, as it did for everyone that year. The 5000 mAh battery, 65W wired charging in the US and 50W wireless were the strongest part of the spec sheet.

The Hasselblad partnership, in its second year, delivered a 48MP Sony IMX789 main camera that was competent and a 50MP ultrawide with a 150-degree fisheye mode that was a novelty, while the 8MP 3.3x telephoto lagged the Pixel 6 Pro badly. Then the ownership details. Only the T-Mobile version carried an IP68 rating; the unlocked $899 phone had none.

JerryRigEverything's bend test cracked the frame at the antenna cuts beside the volume keys and the phone folded in two, a failure no other flagship of the year managed. Three Android updates followed, through 15. It was a competent phone at a flagship price with the brand's identity missing, and the 11 that followed launched $200 cheaper, which says what OnePlus thought of it.
