The Pixel 7 Pro, launched in October 2022 at 899 dollars, is where Google's Tensor era came good. It refines the Pixel 6 Pro's camera bar design in polished aluminum, runs the second generation Tensor G2, and pairs a 50MP main camera with a 12MP ultrawide that doubles as a macro lens and a 48MP 5x telephoto.

That camera is the headline. Reviewers widely rated it the best on any Android phone, with lifelike color, fine detail, strong low light results and Super Res Zoom that stays usable well past 5x. The software adds clever extras such as Photo Unblur, Clear Calling and Call Screen, and the 6.7 inch QHD+ 120Hz OLED is bright and sharp, if a notch behind Samsung and Apple.

The weaknesses are real. Tensor G2 trails Qualcomm and Apple in speed and efficiency, charging is slow by Android standards, and battery life split critics, strong in some tests and below average in others. Owners also reported the rear camera glass cracking without a drop, and Google promised only three Android upgrades at launch, though it later extended support to five years.

For 899 dollars it undercut rival flagships while beating most of them on photography, which made it one of the smartest buys of 2022.
