The standard iPhone 17 is the one most people should buy, and in 2025 it finally fixed its biggest flaw. The 6.3 inch OLED now runs ProMotion at up to 120Hz, so scrolling looks as smooth as on the Pro models, a feature that was overdue on the base phone. The A19 chip is fast, 8GB of memory keeps things fluid, and storage starts at a healthier 256GB.

The camera is a 48MP main paired with a 48MP ultrawide, and it produces the clean, reliable images Apple is known for. There is no telephoto, so long zoom is digital only, but for everyday shooting it is excellent. Battery life is solid for a phone this size, comfortably a full day for most users.

Running iOS 26 with the same long support as its pricier siblings, the iPhone 17 gives you most of the flagship experience for far less. It lacks the Pro cameras, the titanium build and the fastest chip, but none of those absences hurt in normal use.

At 799 dollars it is the sensible heart of the range. Unless you specifically need a telephoto lens or the absolute best screen, this is the iPhone that makes the most sense.
