Announced on November 12, 2025 alongside a new Steam Controller and the Steam Frame headset, the Steam Machine is Valve's real return to the living room after the failed first attempt a decade ago. It is a 160 millimeter cube built around a semi custom AMD Zen 4 six core processor and an RDNA 3 graphics part with 28 compute units and 8GB of dedicated GDDR6, paired with 16GB of system memory. Valve claims over six times the horsepower of the Steam Deck and targets 4K at 60 frames with FSR upscaling. It began shipping from June 2026 through a randomized reservation queue rather than open stock.
What you get for that is the cleanest living room Steam experience yet. It runs SteamOS, so the entire Steam catalog is available through Proton, it stays quiet and cool, the industrial design is tasteful, and because it is a full PC underneath you are not locked into a walled garden. As a console simple way to put your library under the television, nothing else does it as neatly.
The problem is the bill. At 1049 dollars for the 512GB model and up to 1428 for the 2TB version with a controller, you are paying a lot for what is roughly RTX 4060 class performance, and a self built mini PC can beat it for similar money. Valve itself admitted the price climbed higher than it wanted, and the lottery style distribution adds friction. For SteamOS devotees who want the tidiest box under the screen, it delivers, but no one should pretend it is a bargain.
