Valve turned an entire PC library into a handheld and shipped the repair manual in the box with it.

The achievement here is Proton, not the silicon. Valve's compatibility layer turns a Linux device into something that runs most of a Windows catalogue without the owner ever thinking about it, and the verified badge system made that legible to people who do not want to read a wiki before buying. The custom Van Gogh APU, four Zen 2 cores and eight RDNA 2 compute units inside a 15 watt envelope, is a modest part, and the 1280x800 screen is the honest concession that follows: demanding games run at 30 fps with settings cut, and the original LCD panel is dim and washed out next to the OLED revision.
The chassis is chunky at 669 grams, with a grip depth that makes long sessions comfortable anyway, and the twin trackpads rescue strategy games and immersive sims in a way no rival handheld manages. Valve then published exploded diagrams and sold spare parts, which almost nobody does. At $399 for an entry model with slow, cramped storage, it earns the grade on ambition and openness rather than raw output.
