The Dreamcast did nearly everything right and still died. Soul Calibur was a better game than any arcade version. Shenmue attempted an open world before the phrase existed. Jet Set Radio, Crazy Taxi, Power Stone and Phantasy Star Online were each the kind of game a platform gets one of. The modem and a real web browser put it online years ahead of anyone, and the VMU memory card with its own little screen remains a charming, useless idea.

What killed it was timing and trust: Sega had burned the Saturn's owners and the Sega CD's before them, third parties had gone to Sony, and the PlayStation 2 was announced with a DVD player and specifications that made the Dreamcast look finished before it had started. It sold well for a year and then the company withdrew from hardware for good. The library holds up remarkably.
