Nintendo Switch Lite Review

2019NintendoConsole

A Switch that does not switch, which is either the point or the deal breaker.

Nintendo removed the feature in the name and charged less for it. The Lite cannot dock, cannot detach its controls, and cannot play the handful of games that require Joy-Con motion, and in exchange it is lighter, sturdier, comes in real colours and costs two thirds of the price. For a child, a commuter or anyone buying a second machine for a household, that trade is obviously correct, and the built in d-pad is better than the split buttons on the full size model.

The weaknesses are the ones the whole family shares: the same aging chip, a screen that is smaller and dimmer than the original rather than better, and a battery that improved only modestly. It is the right Switch for a lot of people and the wrong one for anyone who owns a television.
