2026ModRetroConsole
A handsome FPGA Nintendo 64 that plays original cartridges with no lag, though its 4K picture and firmware still need polish

Like ModRetro's Chromatic handheld, the M64 takes a direct approach to Nintendo's 1996 console: rebuild the hardware in an FPGA rather than emulate it in software. An AMD chip reproduces the original's timing and audio, cartridges and controllers from the old console plug straight in, and the picture goes out over HDMI at up to 4K with CRT filters, scanline options and an overclocking mode that eases some games' slowdown. The translucent shell, a light bar that lights the cartridge label and an eject button make it a lovely object, and ModRetro's optional wireless controller keeps the original three pronged layout in a heavier, sturdier build.
Most reviewers are delighted with how it plays. Input lag is negligible, games boot quickly, compatibility with original cartridges is broad, and firmware updates arrive over the air. ModRetro also publishes new games for it.
The dissent centers on image processing and polish. Scaling a low resolution signal to a 4K panel can look soft, the filters trail those of the rival Analogue 3D, custom settings do not always stick, flash cart support is patchy, and save states were still a promise at launch. Controllers cost extra. For collectors with a shelf of cartridges it is a charming, cheaper way back to the N64, but not yet the definitive one.
